Library Company of Philadelphia

Ask    Welcome to the Library Company of Philadelphia's Tumblr page! Founded by Ben Franklin in 1731, we are an independent research library specializing in American history and culture from the 17th through the 19th centuries. This page highlights materials from LCP's extensive collection of rare books, manuscripts, broadsides, ephemera, prints, photographs, and works of art.

Would you like some wine? How about a hand instead?

Meet Linda August, Curator of Arts & Artifacts. Linda catalogs and takes care of a variety of objects from paintings of those who influenced LCP, to colonial furniture, to some of Ben Franklin’s inventions or a clipping of George Washington’s hair. You can sometimes find her winding up a Tall Case Clock c1673. Here, she holds one of the spookiest items in the collection, the Mummy’s Hand encased in a wine box, which was given to LCP by the historical painter, Benjamin West in 1767. Gives you that Halloween feeling doesn’t it?
