Library Company of Philadelphia

Ask    Welcome to the Library Company of Philadelphia's Tumblr page! Founded by Ben Franklin in 1731, we are an independent research library specializing in American history and culture from the 17th through the 19th centuries. This page highlights materials from LCP's extensive collection of rare books, manuscripts, broadsides, ephemera, prints, photographs, and works of art.

Meet Holly Phelps, Chief of Cataloging. One of Holly’s favorite items in the collection is a detached leaf from Nuremberg Chronicle (1493). It is sad to see a lonely page from such a famous book, but this page is a piece of history in and of itself. The woodblock prints illustrate portraits of past Popes, one being quite exceptional, the female Pope Joan holding an infant in the bottom-most portrait. #LCPinsider
