Ask    Welcome to the Library Company of Philadelphia's Tumblr page! Founded by Ben Franklin in 1731, we are an independent research library specializing in American history and culture from the 17th through the 19th centuries. This page highlights materials from LCP's extensive collection of rare books, manuscripts, broadsides, ephemera, prints, photographs, and works of art.

Today is the very last day of our exhibition #GiltyPleasures : Sharing Special Collections through Social Media and our visitors have spoken! This trade card of an adorable kitty received the most love with 15 hearts!

We are happy to say that every image on our wallpaper has at least one heart and we thank everyone for participating in bringing something most of us engage with daily through digital means to the analog. This exhibition was a treat to put together and we loved the inspiration our followers provided!

The #GiltyPleasures exhibition is very much a collaboration with our followers. This image originally posted for a #miniaturemonday is one of our most popular posts since beginning the Library Company’s social media initiative and is highlighted in our section on Making Connections. Being an active part of our online community is invaluable to the success of our initiative and we thank YOU our followers for being our co-curators for #GiltyPleasures (open through April 6th!).

It has been exactly a year since we started our new social media initiative, and we thought it fitting to throwback to our humble beginning with Lucy the Elephant (1884). She is a little more animated this time.

We thank our followers for all their support!!

Elephant House, Atlantic City. Taken by Sam [Samuel Buckley Morris]. 1 photograph: glass plate negative; 4 x 5 in. Morris, Marriott Canby, 1863-1948, photographer.

In our current exhibition celebrating social media, we highlight our whimsical side with a compilation of gifs and videos we’ve shared. This #librarygif has special meaning, both commemorating our very first post and highlighting one of our favorite collections. This image from the Marriott C. Morris Collection of Lucy the Elephant offers some Jersey Shore nostalgia as well, and I think we all are wishing for those lazy days of summer right now.

This week’s publisher’s binding feature is a true Gilty Pleasure ;)

1882, Lorna Doone. Blackmore, R. D. Philadelphia : Porter & Coates.

This popular post (originally on April 7, 2016) was one of our inspirations for our current exhibition #GiltyPleasures : Sharing Special Collections through Social Media and I think you can see why. This beautiful gilt stamped binding was hidden in an unassuming wrapper, but we can thank that wrapper for preserving this binding so well.

Today is the last day of the #ColorOurCollections challenge. We are sad for this week to end, but coloring isn’t over for us. As part of #GiltyPleasures : Sharing Special Collections through Social Media we created a coloring station and display wall for this year’s coloring book! To download the full res version of the coloring book visit: http://library.nyam.org/colorourcollections/library-company-of-philadelphia-coloring-book/
